Another look at Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring

Strand woven bamboo flooring is probably the most environmentally friendly type of sustainable flooring. This can be asserted because nothing grows quicker than bamboo. That makes bamboo the best renewable resource. When you consider that bamboo produces more oxygen than trees, needs less water and can thrive without fertilizers and pesticides it makes an impressive argument for using bamboo for sustainable flooring.

Strand woven bamboo is made by cutting moso bamboo into strands and then boiling the strands to remove sugars. Then the bamboo strands are compressed under heat with a low VOC adhesive. The result is a solid block of strand woven bamboo that is very much like timber. It is then sent to a mill and cut into 6 foot planks.

Strand woven bamboo flooring is very hard and looks like hardwood flooring. It is much cheaper than hardwood flooring and like hardwood flooring it is anti-allergenic. The flooring is easy to install and maintain and can withstand high traffic situations.

The only slight downsides to strand woven bamboo flooring is that it is not made with zero VOC adhesive, and that it is mostly made in China. Despite an improving environmental record in China it is still very much in doubt how badly the mass production of bamboo in China is damaging the local environment.
